To provide a safe, trusting and loving environment for children of qualified low-income parents in Santa Monica and adjacent cities. It is our purpose to foster wholesome social, emotional, intellectual and physical growth to all children we serve as well as a resource to families.
The Children’s Place Preschool is a child development program, a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic school, where differences between cultures are valued and celebrated. We are committed to creating a nurturing environment where each child is encouraged to:
- Identify and express their feelings,
- Solve problems non-violently by developing verbal skills,
- Enhance self esteem through exploration of their interest and ideas
Curriculum is a reflection of our philosophy and values; it is both flexible and individualized. Experiences are planned with the understanding that through play, children build the foundations for further education. We also believe that the school, like an extended family, is an important community of support for parents. We hope that you feel our sincere welcome into our community.
Working with Parents
It is our responsibility to provide a friendly supportive environment and to serve as a resource for families. We offer parent discussion groups, family work days, family pot luck dinners, parent conferences and a loving staff offering reliable and stimulating child care.
Our center provides breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack that is prepared by our own cook. We make food substitutions for children with food allergies and also for students who refrain from eating particular foods for religious or personal reasons.
Cook Maria has been with us for over 20 years preparing wholesome meals for our children and staff. Originally from Guatemala, Maria, a mom of four knows how to put smiles on our faces with delicious and nutritious meals.
The Children’s Place Preschool, with the help from a federal food grant, provides its students with breakfast, lunch and snack. Food is included in the tuition and is carefully picked so each child is getting the nutrition they need. We follow the federal food guidelines and cater to any special need/preference a family might have. The food program is a wonderful part of our center as it is a time to all sit and eat together, learn proper behavior at the table and enhance our social skills with conversation. Children clean up after themselves and even serve themselves when ready.
Sample of our menu
- Breakfast: Scrambled eggs, wheat toast, apples & milk.
- Lunch: Baked chicken, mashed potatoes, salad and melon.
- Snack: Rice cakes, peanut butter*/cream cheese and juice.
*We are not a nut free environment but carefully document allergies and make sure children who are not allowed a certain food are not served it.
Students get to work with highschoolers at Santa Monica High school making friends and ceramic tiles!
The Children’s Place Preschool is also partners with So-La Music Academy- a community performing arts school on L.A’s West Side, bringing students of all ages together to share music:
At The Children’s Place Preschool we have two parent workdays scheduled on Saturdays. Parents come and work on the school, whether it be painting, building or cleaning. We also have parent meetings/workshops every other month on different topics of interest. Parents are more than welcome to volunteer their time at our center. Children enjoy cooking, art, and music and movement with parent volunteers.
It’s just as important as indoor learning at The Children’s Place Preschool. Children at the center strengthen their gross motor skills by climbing, jumping, kicking, riding bikes and running. They will learn about growing plants and foods and role play in our wooden play house. They will be themselves- love, laugh, play and be free!
“We can do it. We can create extraordinary places for young children to discover themselves and the world around them. We can create places for children that tickle the imagination and surprise the senses. We can make places for children of all abilities to interact with nature as they play on the planet. We can craft these spaces with love, collaboration and care.”
